save PANDORA! will be at Street Scene in San Diego this Friday and Saturday, September 19 and 20. We’ll be giving some of the early save PANDORA! t-shirts to artists at the show. If we’re lucky, Beck will be rocking a baby blue save PANDORA! t-shirt! If not, that’s cool. We’ll be rocking ours. If you’re lucky enough to be going to this classic show, keep an eye out for the save PANDORA! Street Team. We’ll be easy to spot. We may even have some stickers or extra t-shirts for you!

The Evolution of savePANDORA!

SavePANDORA.org evolved from a simple idea to solve a complex problem. Our favorite internet radio site, pandora.com, is in danger of being shut down. The powers that be, and the lobby that influences them, have decided that internet broadcasters should pay a disproportionate amount of royalty compensation to record companies for the right to broadcast music for free.

We say “disproportionate” because neither of the other two audio broadcast media pay anywhere close to the same fees. Satellite radio pays royalties based upon the revenue generated from their broadcasts (a fixed percentage rate). Traditional microwave radio broadcasters don’t pay royalties at all!

Pandora.com and other internet radio sites pay a flat rate per song per listener, regardless of the revenue generated. Check out our Articles page for more information and specifics.

We feel that the system for royalty compensation should be structured more fairly. Satellite radio, as many of you know, is having a hard time making ends meet. The recent merger between Sirius and XM may help, but only time will tell. Now imagine how difficult it would be for SiriusXM to survive if they had to pay the royalties that internet radio is expected to pay!

We feel that sites like savenetradio.org and a variety of concerned bloggers are doing their part to raise awareness to this issue. But we also feel that those efforts aren’t sufficient. We believe that this fight has to be taken to the streets if it is to be won!

Save PANDORA has a singular mission: To rescue PANDORA and other internet radio sites from unfair and biased legislation through collaboration and action. Rather than simply gripe about the problem, we intend to promote a solution!
